In this episode of Clubhouse Conversations, cinematographer M. David Mullen, ASC joins Kramer Morgenthau, ASC to discuss his work on Étoile — a dance-driven comedy-drama about two world-class ballet companies trading stars in a bid to stay afloat.
Mullen served as director of photography on two episodes of Season 1, including the premiere, “The Swap,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award.
In the interview, Mullen shares how he crafted a color-driven visual language to distinguish Paris’ old-world elegance from New York’s vibrant pop-art modernism. He discusses drawing inspiration from Technicolor classics like An American in Paris, collaborating with Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, and executing ambitious Steadicam sequences with custom tools like the “Wonder Stick.”
