In this episode of Clubhouse Conversations, cinematographer Paula Huidobro joins Oliver Bokelberg, ASC, BVK to discuss her work on The Residence — a comedic mystery series centered on a murder scandal that implicates members of the White House staff.
Huidobro served as director of photography on four episodes of Season 1, including the premiere, “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
In the interview, Huidobro shares how she crafted a stylized, theatrical visual approach inspired by Gosford Park and Panic Room. She discusses the challenges of filming across four stages with multi-level White House sets, designing elaborate dolly and cable-cam shots, and developing a custom soft LED overhead lighting rig. She also reflects on her collaboration with director Liza Johnson to strike the right tonal balance between dark comedy and murder mystery.
