In this episode of Clubhouse Conversations, cinematographer Ji-yong Kim joins Michael Pessah, ASC to discuss his work on Squid Game Season 2 — the gripping Korean dystopian-thriller about a deadly contest that preys on people in financial despair.
Kim served as director of photography on all seven episodes of the new season, which follows Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae) as he sets out to dismantle the brutal organization behind the game.
In the interview, Kim shares how the team used single-camera operation and handheld zooms to stay intimately connected to the actors’ performances. He discusses choreographing complex fight scenes and large-scale sets, using red and blue lighting to emphasize turning points, and crafting geometric compositions as a recurring visual motif. He also reveals how custom eyelight diffusion helped elevate emotional moments throughout the season.
