The latest Behind the Scenes: The State of Inclusion & Equity in TV Writing report reveals disparities across the board between historically excluded writers and non-marginalized writers, including in hiring and promotion practices:
- 85% of showrunners hire from their own networks
- White women (41%) are far more likely to be promoted from assistant ranks than BIPOC women (11%)
When hiring depends on “who you know" — when the main path to breaking in favors some over others — writers rooms stay homogeneous and we all lose authentic stories.
