Richard Linklater is also directing a film adaptation starring Paul Mescal, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein. Production began in 2019, with filming to continue over the next 20 years to realistically capture the passage of time in the story. Linklater's film is not expected to be released until after 2040.
