Spotlight Q&A: Six Questions with Corey
What inspired you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
I grew up in a one movie screen town and rode my bike to the movies by myself starting when I was 7-- and would count out the rows and the seats to sit "in the middle, in the middle." I have always loved to lose myself in the movies, in other people's stories, in the fantastical. The idea that someone could make a living through storytelling seemed magical. It turns out it's also hard and elusive work but worth it.
What is something about your role you'd like people to know more about?
"What does a producer do?" is such a common question that even people in the industry ask. As a member of Producer's United, I feel fortunate to be in the company of some of the best career producer/filmmakers in the industry who have made it a goal not only to clarify the role of Producer in film and television, but to foster sustainability in producing as a career. You can read more at ProducersUnited.com and in this recent article from Variety.
If you weren't in your current role, what other industry job would you like to have?
I love the controlled chaos and the creative island of being on sets so much, I may have missed my calling as a line producer.
What advice do you have for people just starting out in the industry?
If you feel inclined to be a plumber or a dentist, give it serious consideration. But if you just can't help yourself but to get into the entertainment industry, do all you can to meet folks on the business end and production end of the industry before honing in too soon on one career path. And learn how to edit.
How would you like to advance your career in the industry?
Advancing my career in the industry for me is to advance my current projects which I would really be proud for people to get into production, and to make sure that I am a part of creating more opportunity for representation while I do that.
What is your favorite production or project you've worked on?
I couldn't say I have one favorite production, but I have many favorite moments in each. That said, Bride of Chucky was my first movie and I will always be grateful for how much I learned, the support from Universal and our executives, and all the fun we had making that movie with the ridiculously talented folks we convinced to make it with us.
