Spotlight Q&A: Six Questions with Keith
What inspired you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
It was a natural progression from my interest in cameras when I was a child, black & white photography in high school, media arts and television production in high school through to Radio and TV Arts in college. While taking that I realized film production and the Camera Department was my true passion and worked towards that after graduating.
What is something about your role you'd like people to know more about?
Steadicams are heavy and prior to today’s technologies of automatic horizon leveling, were very difficult to truly master, but when you did, the visual storytelling was incredible and so rewarding.
If you weren't in your current role, what other industry job would you like to have?
I’m currently transitioning into my new roles of producer and director. I'm looking forward to developing my own projects.
What advice do you have for people just starting out in the industry?
Take care of yourself: your physical health and your mental health. Eat healthy, get proper rest and embrace “work to live” not “live to work.” Also, make sure you put back into what you’ve taken from. Share your knowledge and experience with those coming up behind you and teach them to do the same as they advance.
How would you like to advance your career in the industry?
At this point in time I’m being selective about shows I camera operate on while moving forward as the producer of the indie psychological/horror/thriller Sound. This spring I’ll DP the proof of concept trailer for Sound and having read close to 1,000 scripts in my career, most of them mediocre, I can recognize a good one. This script is outstanding!
What is your favorite production or project you've worked on?
A wonderful $4 million film called Home Again. It was set in Jamaica but filmed in Trinidad and definitely one of the most positive experiences of my career.
