Spotlight Q&A: Six Questions with Bruce Miles
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
I’ve always been drawn to the film industry, and in 2016 I began pursuing voiceover work as my first step into entertainment. In 2017, I attended a Western Actors Workshop in Blanco, Texas, taught by Bentley Mitchum and his father, Christopher Mitchum. During the workshop, we filmed a short western called Judgment, and that experience really ignited my passion for filmmaking. After that, I started working on western shorts, student films, independent films, and commercials for the NFL and NHL. Coming from a project management background, I eventually realized I enjoyed the producing side of filmmaking even more than acting, and the transition felt like a natural fit.
2. What is something about your role you'd like people to know more about?
Producing is much more than managing budgets and schedules. A producer is constantly balancing creative vision with real-world logistics, helping solve problems while keeping the entire team moving forward. A lot of the work happens behind the scenes, but producers play a major role in shaping the project from development all the way through completion.
3. If you weren't in your current role, what other industry job would you like to have?
I’ve spent more than 20 years working in telecom as a project manager, and I still work full-time in that industry while continuing my transition into filmmaking. If I weren’t producing, I’d likely still be involved in production management or operations because I enjoy organizing complex projects, building teams, and helping bring ideas to life.
4. What advice do you have for people just starting out in the industry?
Take every opportunity you can to learn and gain experience. Independent filmmaking is one of the best training grounds because it teaches you how every department works together. Be dependable, stay humble, and focus on building genuine relationships. Talent is important, but professionalism, consistency, and a strong work ethic are what help people build long-term careers.
5. How would you like to advance your career in the industry?
My long-term goal is to transition fully into filmmaking as a full-time producer, whether that’s producing my own projects or collaborating with other filmmakers. I’d like to continue growing into larger productions while helping create films that are both meaningful and entertaining.
6. What is your favorite production you've worked on?
As an actor, working on the NFL and NHL commercials was definitely a highlight because of the scale and energy of those productions. As a producer, it’s probably a tie between Finish the Song and The Spirit of Christmas Cheer, both created for the 48 Hour Film Project. Those productions were incredibly challenging because of the tight 48-hour deadline, but there’s something very rewarding about seeing an entire film come together from start to finish in such a short amount of time.
