Spotlight Q&A: Six Questions with Chag
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
Filmmaking and literature have always been a central part of my life, as they are the family business. My father works as a producer, while my mother is a scriptwriter, so I was surrounded by creativity and the arts from an early age. I developed a keen interest in a variety of artistic pursuits and crafts during childhood, which was further fueled by spending time in film sets and editing rooms. This environment allowed me to immerse myself in the creative process and contributed to my lifelong passion for storytelling.
Throughout my life, I have maintained a deep passion for storytelling and creativity. Since my youth, I have been captivated by film, music, and theatre, and it became clear to me early on that I wanted to be part of an industry dedicated to bringing stories to life and inspiring audiences.
2. What is something about your role you'd like people to know more about?
There are many different departments within the film industry, but I firmly believe that the production crew acts as a bridge connecting all of these areas. The production team plays a crucial role in ensuring that each department works together smoothly and efficiently.
While people often focus on the glamorous aspects of the entertainment world, there is a significant amount of hard work and collaboration that happens behind the scenes. My role requires not only creativity but also strong problem-solving skills. It involves working closely with a fantastic team to bring ideas to life and turn creative visions into reality. I would like to see myself as Jack of All trades.
3. If you weren't in your current role, what other industry job would you like to have?
If I were not in my current position, I think production design would be my preferred path. The art of creating worlds has always captivated me, and I find the process both creative and inspiring.
4. What advice do you have for people just starting out in the industry?
One of the most important qualities to develop when beginning a career in this industry is patience. The entertainment world can be challenging, especially in the early stages. It is essential to recognise that mastery does not come overnight; you cannot become an expert in your craft without first dedicating yourself to the hard work required. While it may seem a little grim, building a successful career means embracing the less glamorous tasks and learning from them. Only by doing the ‘dirty work’ yourself can you truly understand and excel in your chosen field.
It is equally important to remain open to learning and to be willing to take on new challenges. The industry rewards those who are adaptable and eager to expand their skills. Building relationships is crucial, as connections can often lead to unexpected opportunities. Persistence is key—sometimes doors open in ways you never anticipated, so maintaining determination and a positive attitude will serve you well throughout your journey.
5. How would you like to advance your career in the industry?
As previously mentioned, my primary focus lies in storytelling and creativity. I am eager to discover fresh approaches to these core elements, continually seeking ways to innovate within my craft. Although it is often said that everything has already been accomplished in this industry, I do not subscribe to that belief. There are always new possibilities to explore and inventive paths to forge. Achieving this, however, relies on collaborating with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for originality and creative growth.
Looking ahead, I am keen to take on greater leadership roles in future projects. I am also committed to continuing my exploration of new aspects of production, particularly within the realm of emerging digital media. This ongoing pursuit will enable me to further expand my skills, adapt to industry changes, and contribute to the evolution of the field.
6. What is your favorite production you've worked on?
One of the most formative projects I worked on early in my career was an international documentary, for which I was responsible for location scouting in China. This particular experience played a pivotal role in shaping my decision to continue in the industry. Although I come from a family of creatives, my background did not afford me any shortcuts; my family insisted that I start at the bottom and work my way up. In retrospect, I am grateful for this approach, as it taught me the value of perseverance and hard work from the outset.
