Do we create opportunity or find opportunity?

I've been in the industry as an independent for many years and have come to appreciate the power of networking. That said, the biggest challenge I've had is connecting with the right people who are serious about Producing, and who have the means to take a project to completion. In the past I've done all the work myself (write, produce, direct, edit) and this model isn't the best for getting to the masses.

Which leads me to the question posed in my title: Do we create opportunity or find opportunity?

I know it's a cerebral question but I have to ask because I go back and forth on this one point. Presently, I think success happens somewhere in the middle… we come into contact with the right Producer/Professional when our time is here and then the fun begins.

What do you think?

Agreed, I think it's somewhere in the middle. You need to demonstrate the passion, work ethic and persistance before you attract others attention and build potential opportunities. I think as long as you keep trying and don't give up, you filter out the people that don't match your integrity and likeminded people begin to stand out.

Thanks for responding. I agree. This has been my experience and I find the approach works for me. It's a fun journey and I'm looking forward to what comes next. Do take care and have an awesome day.

Love this question: I think creating one opportunity leads to finding opportunities, in the way that energy begets energy. Networking and being of value to folks who are as driven as you are leads to finding opportunities, at least that has been my experience. I think one mistake I see people making is only looking to connect with people in the industry who seem to have "more" or to be further along— which I think is too limited. I can point to former interns that I created a good relationship with who are now successful producers and writers, and also folks who were kind to me when they were further along who I always remember and have been happy to bring my projects to. It's great to get to the people that can get projects to the greenlight, but the baby writers, assistants and junior agents today are the next leaders.
