This is an article every Executive in Hollywood should read, print out and frame on their walls! - Why ‘Furiosa’ Wasn’t a Box Office Blockbuster, Explained (vulture.com)
"...in order for the American movie industry to become saner and more sustainable, it has to give up on the idea that the only thing that matters is opening weekends and the only things that can make money are the biggest of movies."
Just one example, 25 years ago, a small movie, with a $40M budget, called ‘The Sixth Sense’ would have never been seen by many! The movie had an unknown/untested director (M. Night Shyamalan, who also wrote the script)…the movie opened very slow….and ended up grossing $673M at the Box Office! For those who remember seeing it at the movies. Do you remember the thrills and chills and sharing the SURPRISE ENDING with a theater full of people – I do!
Take a lesson from David Vogel! Then-president of production of Walt Disney Studios, read Shyamalan's spec script and loved it. Without obtaining corporate approval, Vogel bought the rights, despite the price of $3 million and the stipulation that Shyamalan could direct the film. Disney dismissed Vogel from his position at the studio, and Vogel left the company shortly thereafter. Disney sold the production rights to Spyglass Entertainment, while retaining the distribution rights and 12.5% of the film's box office takings (remember $673M at the box office, not including DVD sales, etc.).
Hollywood has made the movie going audience lazy. You don’t have to go to the movies (and maybe discover a fabulous movie you may have never seen – there are so many). Hollywood quickly replaces movies with another and another BIG MOVIE, until they hit what they think is box office gold.
Unfortunately, that pot of gold isn’t guaranteed, nor is it indefinite….IT IS VERY FINITE!
